Exploring Positive Humanism: The Freewill Problem
March 9, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$5.00Free will, Determinism, or Something Else
What is the nature of free will? Is it absolute, or is it does free will exist on a continuum? Is understanding free will necessary to shape a better world or is it a philosophical thought exercise with little practical implication?
As an applied philosophy, positive humanism is interested in philosophical questions of practical concern. The “Freewill Problem” won’t be a conversation in the philosophical abstract – rather, we will examine how our understanding of free will shapes our actions and perceptions of what’s possible for ourselves and society.
Join humanists and like-minded individuals this Thursday to discuss the free will problem.
What to Expect
The exploration series is an opportunity to engage, listen, and learn from others. We’ll follow a Community of Practice model to give structure to the 75-minute session. Participants are welcome to come ready to discuss and deliberate free will, or listen and learn from others.
Join us for a social hour that starts at 6:00 PM with dinner and drinks in the private Emmett Room at Brazen Head. The program gets underway around 6:50. You’re welcome to join us for dinner or just come for the program.
Agenda:
- 6:00 PM – Socialize over dinner & drinks
- 6:45 PM – Exploration series begins
In the interest of fostering an open and welcoming environment, we, as the Humanist Explorer community, pledge to socialize, learn, and collaborate in a respectful and constructive manner. All participants are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct at Humanist Explorer events.
