Secular Book Club – Book: The Lost Sons of Omaha

October 22, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

Join the Omaha Metro Area Humanist Association (OMAHA) for Secular Book Club. We are reading The Lost Sons of Omaha by Joe Sexton. We’ll update this description soon with how far we’re going to read for this week.

About the book:

The Lost Sons of Omaha by Joe Sexton is a book that delves into the tragic events surrounding the deaths of two young men during a Black Lives Matter protest in Omaha, Nebraska. The book examines the complex issues of racial tension, economic disparity, social media misinformation, and gun violence that converged to create this “made-in-America tragedy.” It offers a compassionate yet objective account of the lives of these two individuals, who were “reduced to grotesques” in the distorted landscape of social media. The author’s meticulous reporting and nuanced storytelling provide readers with a somber and troubling look at crime and punishment without justice.

How to find us:

We are in the party room, toward the back of the establishment, near the bar.

New to Secular Book Club? Let us quickly introduce ourselves:

Secular Book Club has been around for almost a decade. Our members come from varied walks of life, each bringing unique experiences and insights to our discussions. This diversity enriches our meetings, making every gathering a blend of fresh perspectives and collective wisdom.

We begin with lunch at 12:30 PM at The RTG on Center, a fun neighborhood bar where Google reviewers rave about the quality of the food. As lunch wraps up, we have a light check-in segment—a moment for everyone to share a positive highlight from their week. It’s a subtle way to connect and set the tone for the deeper discussions. While the book of the month guides our core conversation, it’s not unusual for current events, local news, and personal experiences to add rich layers to our discourse.
